History

The history of the city dates back to 1850s when Zakarias Toftezen and  CW Sumner settled in the  area. The former was a shoemaker from Norway while the latter was from New England. The settlement of these two people initiated the sprouting of businesses and houses along the shores of Oak harbor. This is because, these pioneers heavily depended on water transportation for   their businesses until 1900s. In the subsequent thirty years, steamers and freighters acted as the main means of transport in carrying passengers from the island to the mainland.  The inhabitation by Irish in 1850s prompted further prosperity in the area since they participated in fishing and farming which in return resulted to upcoming of the churches, schools, and more businesses. The major developmental breakthrough occurred after construction of the deception pass bridge in1935 and also the building of the Naval Air station in 1942
