Tacoma is a city that is located in Pierce County, Washington. Although it is a mid-sized urban Port city, it is the second largest city in Puget Sound Area. According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 198,397.
The earliest inhabitants of this area were the American-Indians. In 1864, Job Carr, a land speculator built a cabin that served as the area’s first post office. However, Carr sold his project to Morton McCarver who named it Tacoma City. This was derived from the indigenous name of the mountain that borders the present city. The city was incorporated 1875 after the lobbying by McCarver and others. The discovery of gold in the area in 1898 made the city thrive throughout the 19th century.
The city occupies an area of 62.34 square miles according to the United States Census Bureau. Out of this, 49.72 is covered by land while the remaining 12.62 square miles is occupied by water.
