History

The earliest inhabitants of this area were the American-Indians. In 1864, Job Carr, a land speculator built a cabin that served as the area’s first post office. However, Carr sold his project to Morton McCarver who named it Tacoma City. This was derived from the indigenous name of the mountain that borders the present city. The city was incorporated 1875 after the lobbying by McCarver and others. The discovery of gold in the area in 1898 made the city thrive throughout the 19^th century.
