History

This city is named after Mount Vernon, which is a plantation estate and resting place of George Washington. Jasper Gates and Joseph Dwelley were among the first settlers of the area and ended up laying out the city’s first plan. The area had not yet been cleared of the many trees that covered the area. This city was catapulted into economic growth by its central location in terms of the logging, mining and farming activities in the area.

This city is quite expansive as it covers a total area of 12.61 square miles. Out of this, 12.30 square miles is covered by land while 0.31 square miles is covered by water.

Climate

This city falls on a cool-dry subtropical zone. As such, this city resembles the cool Mediterranean climate. The city’s downtown has in many times succumbed to flooding. However, in 2007, the city acquired an aqua fence which is a temporary solution as they seek for better alternatives.
