Sumas is a rather small town that is located in Whatcom County, Washington. As at the 2010 population census, this town had an estimated population of 1307 people. This is according to the United States Census Bureau. This town is adjacent to the Canada-Us border. In this, it borders the city of Abbotsford, British Columbia.

History

This town and its community were named after the Sumas First Nation. In addition, a post office with the same name (Sumas) has been in operation since 1897. The town was officially incorporated in June 18^th, 1891. This city has since been a hub of all races, having at least 4 different races as permanent residents.

Area

Sumas has a total area of 1.48 square miles. This is according to the United States Census Bureau. All of this area is covered by land. A surveying error that exists in this area made a part of Sumas lie above the 49^th parallel and hence it became the northern-most incorporated place in the contiguous United States.
