History

The Lummi people have inhabited the island for thousands of years. The first European contact was in 1792, when Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcalá Galiano visited the island and named it Isla de Pacheco. British fur traders arrived in the early 19th century and renamed the island McLoughlin Island after Dr. John McLoughlin, the chief factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The United States acquired the island in the Oregon Treaty of 1846 and renamed it Lummi Island in 1853.

The island’s economy was historically based on fishing and logging. The Nooksack Fish Packing Company had a cannery on the island at Sunrise Cove from 1919 to 1930. Today, the island’s economy is primarily based on tourism and agriculture.

Despite its modest size, the island packs a punch in terms of natural beauty, offering diverse landscapes within reach for exploration.
