How Can a Person Hack Your Home Security System?

Most recently developed home security systems are wireless and provide homeowners several advantages. You might, for instance, equip or disarm your system from your smartphone, access your cameras remotely, and even use a button to lock or unlock your doors. Still, this kind of wireless technology has several shortcomings.

Wireless security systems access your home’s wireless internet using radio waves, hence your system is vulnerable to hackers. Fortunately, there are various ways you could guard yourself should you be concerned about hackers compromising your house security system.

Use Strong Passwords

Your smart house should have a deadbolt, not a cheap suitcase lock. Creating a strong password with a password manager is the recommended course of action. Having to remember dozens of passwords or clicking the “forgot your password” link every time you log in is eliminated with a password manager.

Even the most advanced technology cannot easily crack the random passwords generated by the majority of password managers. It also allows you to keep track of how long it has been since you last updated your password. You can prevent hackers by changing your passwords a few times a year. To prevent password manager hacking, make sure you create a powerful master password.  Otherwise, hackers will be able to access all of your credentials with ease.

Use Two-factor Authentication

Enabling two-factor authentication is similar to having a second password, in case a hacker bypasses your username and password. They won’t be able to access it even if they provide the correct login information without a unique code, typically sent by text message or email.

The finest thing is that you can change your password by getting a warning of dubious behavior. Two-factor authentication is not present in most smart gadgets. Using a password manager with two-factor authentication is a smart idea until this capability is more common.

Just like how banks utilize credit card scanning for added security, implementing two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts. It’s a simple yet effective way to safeguard your personal information from potential cyber threats.

Update Firmware

The low-level software that runs your router and Internet of Things devices is called firmware. To update the password (which should be distinct from the Wi-Fi password) and alter other settings, you can either access the firmware of your router or log in using the related app.

Additionally, homeowners update their linked devices with new features and bug patches; many of these updates happen automatically over Wi-Fi. It might be possible to guarantee that your smart device receives these updates by registering it with the manufacturer.

Many other devices call for owners to personally update their devices for the newest security fixes and delights. Ignoring them could leave your device open to hackers seeking to take advantage of unpatched holes by running earlier firmware versions.

Check App Permissions

Some apps for smart homes gather information about your usage. Examine the information it is collecting and refuse app permissions if you are not using certain capabilities, such as Bluetooth connectivity and location data.

While communication between smart home devices is one of its greatest benefits, it can also compromise your security. Ensure that you unlink any gadgets that you discard or that stop functioning from the rest of your smart home devices to prevent hackers from using them as a future backdoor into your system.

Endnote

You can check to see if the LED indicator light on your camera is turning on at strange times. If you use video storage, you can also search your app for unexpectedly recorded recordings. In order to frighten or perplex owners, unauthorized individuals also enjoy tampering with the two-way audio on security cameras.
