Windstream Kinetic Internet City TECUMSEH, NE 68450
Tecumseh city is the county seat of Johnson County, Nebraska, United States. As per the 2010 census, Tecumseh had a small population of 1,677 people consisting of 447 families in 722 households.
While the history of the city goes back to 1856, the origin of the name is shrouded in mystery. Tecumseh was originally called Frances which has been wrongly attributed to Frances, the wife of Col. Richard M Johnson, the namesake of the county where Tecumseh is located.
However, the only marriage of Johnson was to Julia Chinn, a common-law spouse who was a slave of one-eighth African and seven-eighths European ancestry and was born into slavery in 1790. Several historians though think that the legislature wanted to name the county seat after Francis Burt who was the first Governor of the Nebraska Territory.
Finally, a few months after it was founded, the city was named Tecumseh after the Native American Chief who is said to have been killed by Johnson in the Battle of the Thames. In February 1857, Tecumseh was established as a county seat by the Nebraska Territorial Legislature.
Visitors to Tecumseh have their hands full with places to visit and things to do.
The Homestead National Monument of America is one of the most famous landmarks in the country located just 37 miles west of the city. The Tecumseh Country Club has a beautiful 9-hole golf course with refreshments and space for parties at the Club House. There are several museums too – the Johnson County Historical Society Museum, the John Decree Museum, and the Montz Motorcycle Museum with over 80 classic motorcycles on display.
