Ashville, a city incorporated in 1822 is located in Saint Clair County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of St. Clair County together with Pell City.

The history of Ashville goes back to 1817 when it was founded in the community of St. Clairsville and named to honor John Ash, the first white settler who arrived in the area in 1817. He went on to become the first county judge and later a senator from the state. The land on which Ashville stands was originally owned by Philip Coleman who later sold 30 acres to five county commissioners including Ash. In 1821, Ashville was declared as the county seat and was incorporated in 1822.

In 1890, a group of investors organized the Tennessee River, Ashville, and Coosa Railroad Company and drew up plans to build a railroad line from Sheffield to Anniston through Ashville. But the project did not make much headway and was built up to Ashville from Whitney, thereby connecting the town to the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. This also did not last long and the company went bankrupt in the mid-1890s, dismantling and selling the tracks for scrap.

Electric lights were first set up in Ashville in 1891, followed in the same year by the establishment of the first telephone company. When the residents of the southern half of the county complained of traveling to Ashville over the Backbone Mountain that divides the county, the state legislature authorized a satellite county seat to be established in Pell City in 1907 on the southern side of the mountain.
