Windstream Kinetic Internet in Amity, AR

Amity dates back to the arrival of a pioneering family group led by Deacon William F. Browning, a Clark County Surveyor (1846–1850, 1852–1854) on the old Cado Cove Road north of Cado. The river settled in late 1847. Abundant water and abundant wetlands attracted them to the area, which has now glorified into a significant dwelling with an Internet connection from Windstream Kinetic Internet cities: AMITY, AR, reaching every house and workplace.

Shortly after arrival, Browning built a large two-story log house west of Canny Creek. It quickly became the center of an expanding community. According to Laura Scott, an early historian of Clark County, Browning named his settlement “Amity” in the hope of finding “peace and brotherhood” in it.

In August 1848, Browning and a group of locals founded the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, the first religious group in the region. He built a log house in a large church that doubles as Amity’s school, taught by Captain Robert S. Burke, Browning’s brother-in-law. A few months later, the Amity Post Office was established nearby.

Living in Amity, Arkansas The old Amity didn’t see the real battle, but the Civil War was a difficult time for the community. Union soldiers burned the Burke school building and the Browning Cotton Press. As the war progressed, the loyalty of the locals, who initially supported the cause of the South Army, split, and the family served both the Union and South Armies.

After the war, the center of the parish was the area first discovered around 1850 by John Hayes Allen and Dr. and moved to the south side of the Cado River. Shortly thereafter, Amity’s post office moved to this new area.

By 1870, Connecticut-born Colonel Philander Curtis, remembered as an old bachelor wearing a wig and holding a pet bear had moved to the area. He built one of the first commercial buildings where Amity stands today and served as postmaster for several years.

In 1871, Curtis and two other local businessmen, Riley Thomson and Jacob H. Lightsey, purchased Allen’s property and set up a small town plot on a public square. By 1874, Amity had become a thriving small village with new shops and several churches. The adjacent area became Amity Township in 1877. The parish was incorporated in 1880, but nothing happened.
