Dalark, AR lies about 16 miles south of Arkadelphia, Clark County, off Highway 8. Dalark town got its name from Dallas and Clark Counties since it lies on the borders of the two.

According to Goodspeed’s 1891 County History, Dalark got its name after the child of Ultima Thule, Arkadelphia & Mississippi Railway that was started in 1886. It passed through Princeton and Fordyce, but was later extended about 5 miles into the county from the west. The railway had sprung up to service the plant of Arkadelphia Lumber Company and hence Dalark is often called a mill town with several stores.

Even though Dalark is a small place, one of the landmarks that is a must-visit is the historic Henry Atchley House. It is located on County Road 249 just off Arkansas Highway 8. This double-storied structure was built in 1908 by Henry Atchley who had a general store in town.

The house has several stylish elements like posts supporting a hip-roofed porch across the front and a double-door entry with a transom window.

The front block of the house has a side-gable roof pierced by three gabled dormers, and a cross-gabled ell extended to the rear. The house was built in the economic boom associated with the arrival of the railroad and the community’s subsequent economic success.

The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
