St. Paul is a settlement on the White River in southern Madison County. St. Paul is located close north of the Ozark National Forest near numerous high peaks in the Ozark Mountains and is spanned by County Roads 16 and 23. There is an active internet connection service in St Paul, AR, offered by Comcast Businessservice provider.
Before the first European settlers came to northern Arkansas, the Osage hunted wild animals in the Ozark Mountains. In the White Canyon surrounding St. Paul, fifteen people had already constructed their homes by 1834. In 1840, a post branch was located there. Around the same period, a Methodist church was established. William Ake was the first to get a land grant for the region in 1848. In 1860, FieldenSalyer joined him.
A glimpse of the historic past
In 1887, the Fayetteville but Little Rock Railroad (which would later now become a division of St. Louis–San Francisco Railway) made its way to St. Paul. The train crossing Salyer’s farm was given the right-of-way. The railroad company laid out a town, and inhabitants migrated from the previous St. Paul, which had become known as Old St. Paul but was also known as Scully by others.
Louisa was the label given to the first post office in New St. Paul, which opened in 1887. The post office in Old St. Paul was renamed Mills the following year, and it closed soon after. In 1888, Louisa was renamed, St. Paul. St. Paul became a city in 1891.
In the St. Paul region, trees were felled and transformed into railroad ties. The town flourished swiftly with supermarkets, stables, three hotels, metal workers, twelve processing plants, and a distillery. In St. Paul, a school was named for influential resident Hugh McDaniel, and Augustus Lowe, a grandson of the previous governor Isaac Murphy, founded a newspaper, the St. Paul Republican. Hair salons, health stores, a theater, a Meetinghouse, and a jail were also located in the town.
St. Paul was considered the county seat for Madison County at the turn of the twentieth century. Still, citizens of the county elected to maintain the government in Huntsville, which is more centrally placed (Madison County).
The Bank of St. Paul was founded in 1905 and operated until the Great Depression; it was removed from the market in 1931. Its owners were accused with intent to commit a crime and prosecuted for continuing to take deposits after the declaration of insolvency.
St. Paul was connected to Huntsville, Ozark (Franklin County), Winslow (Washington County), or Fallsville by state highways established in 1924 and 1925. With the fall of the timber business, St. Paul’s affluence dwindled. The town’s last railway went through in 1937. In 1939, the Youth Empowerment Administration (NYA) and the Civil Works Administration (WPA) built a new school facility.
In 1948, the school was merged into the Huntsville School District, although students continue to attend St. Paul High School.
During the 1920s, St. Paul locals organized an annual reunion for school alumni. This event evolved into Pioneer Day, which now does include a parade, handmade jewelry, square dancing, music, food, and beverages. Residents dress up in period attire for the festival.
