History

The city of Wagoner, OK was incorporated as the first city in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma on 4 January 1896. It was named in honor of the railroad dispatcher, Henry “Big Foot” Wagoner. A small community began to form in this city when William McAnally, a foreman for the MKT, built a small hotel at this isolated location in June 1887. In 1895, a local newspaper began promoting the city and encouraging more people to move here. Wagoner, OK saw a real estate book in 1897, when The Dawes Commission turned Indian Territory Land from Tribal to individual ownership of each member of the tribe and allowed the individuals to sell this land to non-Indians. After World War II, many small manufacturing units were set up in Wagoner, OK.
