Wellborn (pronounced “well-born”) is a small hamlet in Suwannee County’s northeastern region, founded in 1830 by plantation owner George E. McClellan. He first dubbed the community Little River, and the name ‘Wellborn’ didn’t exist for another thirty years. The Pensacola and Georgia Railroad Line, which connected Jacksonville and Tallahassee, was built in the late 1850s.

It traveled east-west across north Florida, passing through Little River. A civil engineer engaged in the train line’s construction, Louis Wellborn DuBois, acquired 240 acres in Little River, which he surveyed, platted, called Wellborn, and began selling. The plats sold quickly because of their proximity to the train line, and the town grew.

The first post office in Wellborn opened in 1860. Within forty years, the population of Wellborn and its environs had swelled to almost 250 families. While agriculture was the town’s primary activity, it also had “grist mills, cotton gins, general retail stores, board houses, saloons, and a millinery” at one time (source).

Trains hauled timber from neighboring White Springs to market through a spur linked to the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad Line at Wellborn; cattle, cotton, and vegetables from the Wellborn region used the railroad to reach a variety of markets. In addition, Wellborn was the first community in Suwannee County to have brick roadways.

But, like many other prosperous settlements around the start of the twentieth century, Wellborn succumbed to the ravages of time. The community of Live Oak was chosen as the county seat by Suwannee County citizens. Wellborn was bypassed by north Florida’s major roads and interstates, reducing rail transit and cargo.
