Ringgold is an unincorporated community in Montague County, Texas, United States. It is about 20 miles northeast of Montague, the county seat.<\/p>\n

In the mid-1920s Ringgold was a small town with a population of about 400. It remained at 350 after WWII right till the mid-1960s but declined drastically by the 70s till 2005, touching a low of 100.<\/p>\n

The history of the town dates back to 1892 with the arrival of the Rock Island Railroad though it is reported that people had been living in the vicinity since the 1870s. This Railroad track intersected with the Katy (Missouri, Kansas, and Texas) Railroad track when it entered Texas from the North.<\/p>\n

It was a unique opportunity for the sparse population of the area and the landowner Joe Harris quickly laid out a townsite and named it Harrisonia. However, when a post office was applied for, the authorities rejected the application on the grounds that it clashed with Harrison.<\/p>\n

The option before Harrison was simple. He could either resubmit an invented name or choose his wife\u2019s family name. He chose the latter, Ringgold which was accepted. The post office was opened in 1892 when the population of Ringgold was about 300.<\/p>\n

Because of the railroad junction, Ringgold flourished quickly and became a shipping and transit point for the area. The market town soon achieved the highest population ever of 400 in the mid-1920s.<\/p>\n

A devastating fire due to a wildfire on January 1, 2006, destroyed half of the town and burned down more than 32 homes.<\/p>\n
