You’ll pass through Dowling Park while traveling west on CR250 through Suwannee County towards the Suwannee River and the county boundary. You might not see it if you blink. There isn’t much along CR250 save a few convenience businesses and a church. A Look Back in Time<\/strong><\/p>\n

The region was originally known as Hudson on the Suwannee. Still, it was renamed Dowling Park when Suwannee County lumber mogul Thomas Dowling relocated his enormous wood company around the start of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

The Dowling Park sawmill and train terminal was close to the R.L. Dowling Shortline, which connected Dowling Park to the main railroad line running through Live Oak and was originally named for a cousin, Robert L. Dowling, who served as vice president of the railroad. It grew westward towards Perry and the Gulf, and it was renamed the Live Oak, Perry, and Gulf Railroad.<\/p>\n

Community & Way of Life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomas Dowling intended that his Dowling Park would become a popular holiday resort area in addition to functioning as a neighborhood around the sawmill. As a result, he established the Dowling Park Hotel Resort in the early 1900s, which had swimming pools, bowling, billiards, and other resort facilities along the Suwannee River at Dowling Park.<\/p>\n

Dowling Park was founded to service the sawmill and or the people who worked there. However, when local timber resources began to wane, and the logging business followed the railroad westward, the village needed a new purpose if it was to survive.<\/p>\n

Thomas Dowling’s pastor, Burr Bixler of the Advent Christian Church of Live Oak, convinced him to deed 120 acres of his land at Dowling Park \u2013 in the region that had previously housed the sawmill and train depot, among other parts of the Dowling Park community \u2013 before to his death in 1911.<\/p>\n

Bixler’s original plan for the property was to be used as an Advent Christian campground. Still, even so, after receiving a call from a widowed parishioner in declining health who was looking for a home for her soon-to-be orphaned children, Bixler set out to establish a home for orphans and a retirement community for Advent Christian Church clergy in Dowling Park.<\/p>\n

The original facility of the American Advent Christian Home and Orphanage, located at Dowling Park, opened its doors to its first orphans in December of 1913.<\/p>\n

Today, if you take CR250 north and enter the Advent Christian Village, you’ll discover a magnificent and far from barren self-contained retirement community with stores, hospitals, restaurants, a post office, and dwellings ranging from single-family houses to a full-service nursing home. Just before you reach the river bridge, a turnoff on the northern side of the road will lead you to a tiny park and boat ramp, and you may see the old railroad trestle from there if you gaze south.<\/p>\n
