History
In 1882, a small settlement called Pearland was established next to a side switch on the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway. The neighborhood was once known as “Mark Belt,” when a post office was first established in 1893. Polish nobleman Witold von Zychlinski submitted the “Pear-Land” plat to the Brazoria County courts on September 24, 1894. Residents of Pearland, during the time, picked a variety of fruits. Zychlinski thought “Pearland” would be a fitting name for the neighborhood after noticing the pear trees.
Developers Allison & Richey Land Company marketed Pearland as an “agricultural Eden.” The first neighborhood was known as “Suburban Gardens.” The Galveston hurricanes of 1900 and 1915 decimated most fruit trees, significantly inhibited development, and contributed to a period of desertification in the region. Pearland had 400 people in 1914 when agriculture was thriving, and desertification had stopped, but a catastrophic winter in 1918 further hampered the region’s farming operations.
The Hastings Oilfield was created after oil was discovered nearby in 1934, although the area’s population only increased by about 150 to 350 people. The town’s population had increased since the 1970s when it was smaller.
Neighborhoods
The Hastings Oilfield was created after oil was discovered nearby in 1934. However, the adjacent town’s population only increased from 150 to 350. Therefore there was little growth as a result. The town’s population increased beginning in the 1970s and is now where it is now.
With its population increase, Pearland’s labor force and job base expanded significantly. Jobs in the neighborhood increased from 9,169 in 2000 to 17,552 in 2008. Around 20,000 people lived in the community’s entire workforce in 2000; this number rose to 45,368 in 2010. The bulk of the local labor force commutes daily to the Texas Medical Center and other nearby job hubs. Numerous residents of Pearland work for NASA at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
