History

Early settlement in the Westminster area coincided with the discovery of gold at Little Dry Creek in 1858, followed by the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862, attracting many settlers from the East. Westminster’s first settler was Pleasant his Despain, and in 1870 he built a house on 160 acres of farmland, and the area soon became known as Despain his Junction.

Other settlers soon followed. One of the most prominent figures was horse breeder Edward Bruce Bowles, whose large red-brick house now serves as a local museum. Another early settler was Harris, a Connecticut real estate developer who inspired him to rename the C.J. community Harris. In 1911 Harris was incorporated as a town, renamed Westminster in honor of the local school (College of Westminster) modeled after Princeton University. Tourism features
