History
Alphonso Boone, the grandson of Daniel Boone, constructed the Boones Ferry across the Willamette River in 1847 after settling in what would eventually become Wilsonville in 1846. The town of Boones Landing, which later developed into Wilsonville, was founded due to the ferry. The region was once a part of Yamhill County but was moved to present-day Clackamas County in 1855. In 1876, Boones Ferry became the name of the first post office.
On June 3, 1880, the town was named Wilsonville in honor of Charles Wilson, the first postmaster. The first school, Wilsonville Grade School, started operations in the same year as a one-room structure. By the time the railroad arrived in 1890, the town had a depot, numerous hotels, a saloon, a tavern, a bank, and several other businesses. The twelve school districts from Wilsonville to Lake Oswego were combined to form one system in 1897. Beginning in 1906, a railroad bridge across the river was constructed for the Oregon Electric Railway. The next year, the bridge was finished, and service between Wilsonville and Salem started in 1908.

In the neighborhood, a brand-new Methodist church was constructed in 1910; it was utilized until 1988 and is still standing today. In the same location, a new two-room school was built to replace the previous one-room school two years later. In the middle of the 20th century, a modern school was built to take its place. The wooden trestle portion of the railroad bridge across the Willamette River burnt in 1939. Boones Ferry was shut down with the 1954 opening of the Boone Bridge, which carried what is now Interstate 5 and was once the Baldock Freeway.
On the neighborhood’s west side, the Dammasch State Institution mental hospital opened its doors in 1961. Frank Lloyd Wright’s lone residence in Oregon, Gordon House, was completed in 1963 close to Charbonneau and relocated to the Oregon Garden in 2001. The first fire station was erected in Wilsonville in 1966 after being inundated in 1964. In 1969, Wilsonville, which had a population of roughly 1,000, became a city. A year after construction got underway, the planned hamlet of Charbonneau on the south bank of the river was included in the city in 1971.

Culture
The 28 radio stations, 7 television stations, the local newspaper, and the Wilsonville Spokesman that is part of the Portland media market are all forms of media in Wilsonville. The Spokesman’s weekly circulation of 3,176 is published only on Wednesdays. There is only one Regal Cinemas-run movie theater with nine screens.
