History

The deed of purchase between John Pynchon of Springfield and three native residents known as Umpanchla, Quonquont, and Chickwalopp, dated December 1658, is the earliest recorded document of the territories currently encompassing Amherst. “Ye Indians of Nolwotogg (Norwottuck) along ye River of Quinecticott (Connecticut)” sold the entire region for “two hundred fathoms of Wampam& Twenty fathoms, and one huge Coate at Eight-fathomwchChickwollop set of, of trusts, among benefits listed minor gifts” [sic]. Amherst was first visited by Europeans in 1665 when Nathaniel Dickinson (the poet Emily Dickinson’s great-grandpa) inspected the lands for Hadley, its mother town. In 1727, the first permanent English settlements were established. In 1734, it was designated as a precinct, and in 1759, it was designated as a township.
