The town, which is Hampshire County’s most populous, is a thriving intellectual center. Amherst is home to three notable colleges: Amherst College, Hampshire College, and UMass Amherst. Take a stroll through the big grounds and recite poetry (try local heroine Emily Dickinson) under a towering elm tree to soak up the intellectual legacy. Then we recommend taking advantage of some of a college town’s more hedonistic perks, such as late-night pizza and cookies, fine cocktails, live music, and do not forget to upload your Insta-worthy snaps using the internet connection offered by the top business internet providers in Amherst, MA which is Comcast Business.

History

The deed of purchase between John Pynchon of Springfield and three native residents known as Umpanchla, Quonquont, and Chickwalopp, dated December 1658, is the earliest recorded document of the territories currently encompassing Amherst. “Ye Indians of Nolwotogg (Norwottuck) along ye River of Quinecticott (Connecticut)” sold the entire region for “two hundred fathoms of Wampam& Twenty fathoms, and one huge Coate at Eight-fathomwchChickwollop set of, of trusts, among benefits listed minor gifts” [sic]. In 2009, Amherst celebrated its 250th anniversary.

The Amherst 250th Anniversary Celebration Committee was formed to manage the planning and execution of townwide events in 2009. The Amherst Historical Society also hosted events, including the publication of Amherst A to Z, a book written by Elizabeth M. Sharpe.

Amherst was first visited by Europeans in 1665 when Nathaniel Dickinson (the poet Emily Dickinson’s great-grandpa) inspected the lands for Hadley, its mother town. In 1727, the first permanent English settlements were established. In 1734, it was designated as a precinct, and in 1759, it was designated as a township.

Lifestyle

Amherst’s vibrant downtown features an independent movie theatre, a variety of eateries, and a handful of coffee shops, museums, art galleries, and bookstores, all set against a backdrop of historic architecture and blossoming flower gardens. It may be like a movie set for a classic New England village, but Amherst is the real deal.

Amherst is noted for its bookishness, artsiness, local food preoccupation, openness and tolerance, and beauty, like the rest of Hampshire County. There are many farms, farm stands, and fresh foods can be found. We hope you’ll join us at the farmers market every week. Try Amherst-brewed beers and wines while you’re in Western Massachusetts to get a taste of the local flavor.

Join a game of ultimate frisbee on the town common, ride your bike down the bike path, or relax with a good book and a picnic set. Travel a little further to swim in Puffer’s Pond or walk Amethyst Brook.

The gorgeous Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts is home to the town of Amherst, which is noted for being a diverse and open community. Amherst and its environs are rich in culture, art, music, great cuisine, theatre, and history, with activities and resources suitable for people of all ages. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Amherst Public School System enjoys a stellar reputation. Amherst has a long history of open, professional governance, high-quality education, and environmental and agricultural support.

The Valley’s outdoor activities are unrivaled. Hiking trails, fishing streams, the Connecticut River (a popular boating destination), and a wide range of natural settings — from woodlands to farmlands to ponds — provide stunning views and wonderful experiences for students.
