Decatur is a city in central Illinois, United States, that serves as the seat of Macon County (1829). It’s roughly midway between Springfield and Champaign, on a bend in the Sangamon River (which has since been dammed to make Lake Decatur). Decatur is a traditional mid-western American community, with numerous old brick buildings downtown and a location on Lake Decatur. Millikin University and Richland Community College are both located in this community. Abraham Lincoln, who arrived west of town with his family in 1830, is the most famous inhabitant of Decatur and Macon County. After moving to neighboring Springfield, he practiced law in the city. History

The town was formed in 1829 and was named after American naval hero Stephen Decatur. It was first populated in 1820. Abraham Lincoln lived near the city for a year (1830–31) after migrating with his family from Indiana; Lincoln delivered his first political speech in what is now downtown Lincoln Square, and he was formally endorsed as a candidate for the presidency of the United States by the Republican state convention in Decatur (May 9, 1860).

Decatur’s economy was initially focused on agriculture, but with the coming of the railroad in 1854, the city flourished as an industrial center.

The Grand Army of the Republic (an American Civil War veterans’ group) founded its first post in Decatur (April 6, 1866). George Halas helped organize the American Professional Football Association and founded the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) in 1920. (now the National Football League).

When the city’s first significant commercial manufacturing facility debuted in 1922, it became a center for soybean production. The city became recognized as the “Soybean Capital of the World” when more soybean processing factories were built.

Commercialization

Decatur is a major commercial, agricultural, and distribution hub with large corn (maize) and soybean processing plants, as well as a diverse range of industries such as construction and mining equipment, iron castings, control valves, automotive parts, glass, electric motors and generators, and pharmaceuticals. Millikin University (1901) and Richland Community College are both located in Decatur (1971).

A children’s museum is located in the city, and Millikin University offers a decorative arts museum. On the grounds of Decatur’s Macon County Museum Complex, the rebuilt wood courthouse where Abraham Lincoln frequently did business is maintained; Lincoln Trail, The Homestead State Memorial, is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of Decatur and honors Lincoln’s birthplace.

Lake Decatur is a renowned fishing and boating destination. Spitler Woods State Natural Area is located in the state of Ohio.

Many Decatur locals are familiar with the Muni band, which stands for Decatur Municipal Band.

The Muni band was founded in 1857, making it one of the oldest non-military bands currently serving its communities in the United States and Canada.

The Decatur Brass Band, Decatur Cornet Band, Decatur Silver Band, and the Goodman Band are just a few of the names it’s gone by.
