Hoquiam is a city that was officially established in the year 1867. It is a Washington city in which one of the first logging operations was established in the year 1872, by Ed Campbell. Later, after 10 years, Captain Asa M. Simpson, who was a Pacific Coast mariner as well as a businessman in the lumber industry, provided the money for the Northwestern Mill. In the year 1881, Simpson purchased 300 acres in Hoquiam to establish a mill and for the lumber operation. In the year 1886, the mill was merged with the Miller Brothers mill and was named the Northwest Lumber Company.
