English shires laid the foundation for the settlement. In 1683, William Penn was a key figure in the founding of the city. The governor of Pennsylvania designated Lancaster as a town instead of in 1730.
Andrew Hamilton owned the great majority of the land during this time period. Lancaster hosted meetings of the Continental Congress in 1777, and it served as the state capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1813.
Lancaster was called by John Wright in honor of Lancaster, England, where he previously lived. Because of its ties to Lancaster, England, the town earned the moniker “Red Rose City.” In the year 1818, the territory was established as a city. Lancaster served as the capital of the United States during the Revolutionary War and now it has evolved as one of Comcast Business cities: Lancaster, PA.
History
The city was originally known as Hickory Town, but native John Wright renamed it Lancaster after the English city. The red rose, which is its sign, is a symbol of the House of Lancaster. Lancaster was established in 1681 as part of William Penn’s Penn’s Woods Charter and was planned out by James Hamilton in 1734. In 1742, it was organized as a borough, and in 1818, it was constituted as a city.
After the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia on September 27, 1777, Lancaster became the United States capital for one day at the Court House (built 1739, destroyed by fire 1784, and rebuilt before relocating to current Lancaster County Courthouse in 1852; the original site is now the Soldiers & Sailors Monument at Penn Square c. 1874).
Lancaster was the capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812, with the State Capital convening at the Court House (constructed 1784 and destroyed 1852, now the Soldiers & Sailors Monument at Penn Square),[10] until the capital was transferred to Harrisburg.
The present Lancaster County Prison, sometimes known as Lancaster Castle, was established in the city in 1851. However, it has little resemblance to the Lancaster Castle in England. The jail was utilized for public hangings until 1912, and it is still in use today. It was built to replace a 1737 building in a separate location.
The old Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, which connected the cities of Lancaster and Philadelphia, was the first long-distance paved road in the United States. The turnpike was built entirely of stone and covered with gravel when it was opened in 1795—the sixty-two-mile turnpike cost about $450,000, which was a huge figure at the time. From Lancaster to Thorndale, the route followed what is now Pennsylvania Route 340 (commonly known as the “Old Philadelphia Pike”), and from Thorndale to Philadelphia, it followed U.S. Route 30 Business and U.S. Route 30.
Lancaster was home to a number of significant personalities in American history. One of Lancaster’s most popular attractions is Wheatland, the estate of James Buchanan, the fifteenth President of the United States. Thaddeus Stevens is one of the most powerful men in the world.
Meriwether Lewis came to Lancaster in 1803 to learn surveying techniques from well-known surveyor Andrew Ellicott. As part of his overall training for leading the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Lewis learned to map latitude and longitude during his tour.
