Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas with a current population of 202,591 people, thus making it the most populous city of the state. The city is located near the Arkansas river and was incorporated in 1831. The city was named Little Rock by a French explorer in the 1720s; the name was derived from a rock formation on the Arkansas River. Native Americans inhabited the area for thousands of years before European settlers came in.

Little Rock is known for the role it played during the American civil rights, and the related history – little rock central high school was the spot where the racist incident happened in 1957, where 9 African American teens were denied entry. Visitors can tour the school and learn and read about the incident’s history and how it shaped the entire civil rights movement. The William J. Clinton presidential center showcases artifacts from president Clinton’s term and features a replica of the oval office.

Little Rock holds a very significant place in the state’s economy; big companies are headquartered in the city including Dillard’s, Windstream, Simmons bank, Heifer International, Clinton Foundation, American Taekwandoo association, among others. The largest public employer is the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
