History

Long Branch is a prime city in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is located 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of New York City on the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded in 1668 on property acquired from the Delaware Indians and called after its position on the South Shrewsbury River’s Long Branch. It began to emerge as a summer coastal resort in the 1780s.

Long Branch began to see an inflow of visitors in the 1830s, thanks to wagering and horse racing. It was visited by several notables throughout the Gilded Age (1870s and 1880s), including Lillie Langtry, Lillian Russell, and “Diamond Jim” Brady. It was designated as the United States’ summer capital.

What can you find here?

Long Branch’s nearly five square miles are home to many housing styles, including modern waterfront condos, garden apartment complexes, and prewar residences on tiny lots. Theresa L. Capuano, an associate with Berkshire Hathaway Fox & Roach Realtors in rural Middletown, described it as “very few distinct communities in one.”

Since the Covid-19 virus made working remotely viable, Long Branch has experienced a new surge of purchasers from New York City and northern New Jersey, many looking for either permanent properties or occasional vacations.

Long Branch has more year-round inhabitants than other beach home markets that rely on seasonal rentals, according to Ms. Capuano, mainly students at Monmouth University in adjacent West Long Branch.

Long Branch is also gaining popularity among seniors. “We’ve seen several empty nesters sell their single-family house and purchase an apartment on or near the beach,” George Jackson, the city’s commercial administrator, said.

The beach and walkway remain a popular destination for Long Branch swimmers, surfers, sunbathers, and hikers. Waterfront eateries including Rooney’s, McLoone’s Pier House, SirenaRistorante, Avenue, and Charley’s Ocean Grill, as well as Pier Village’s restaurants and stores, are popular.

Other pedestrian-friendly downtown areas, such as the West End & Broadway, provide various retailers and eateries onshore. Mix Lounge & Food Bar, Long Branch Distillery, The Whitechapel Projects, and Beach Bee Meadery, which specializes in meads and ciders, are among the nightlife choices.
