History

Lynchburg was founded in 1757 and named for its founder, John Lynch (1740-1820). He launched a ferry business at a ford over the James River when he was approximately 17 years old to transport traffic to and from New London, where his parents had relocated. Along the hills around Lynch’s Ferry, the “City of Seven Hills” grew swiftly.

Lynchburg, the hamlet at Lynch’s Ferry on the James River, was acknowledged by Virginia’s General Assembly in 1786. The James River Company had been formed the year before (and President George Washington had been awarded shares, which he donated to charity) to “improve” the river down to Richmond, which was rapidly developing and becoming the new Commonwealth’s capital.

Shallow-draft, The James River bateau, provided a reasonably straightforward mode of transit from Lynchburg to Richmond and then to the Atlantic Ocean. Lynchburg grew from a tobacco trading hub to a commercial and, eventually, an industrial center. By 1812, U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall, who lived in Richmond, had commented on the canal’s and towpath’s navigational and construction concerns.
