History of St. Petersburg

In 1607, English immigrants arrived in Virginia. The Powhatan Confederacy, a Native American group, lived in the area during the time. The English built Fort Henry on the Appomattox River’s south bank in 1646. During the Revolutionary War, the British attempted to seize Virginia at the Battle of Petersburg in 1781.
