History of St. Petersburg
In 1607, English immigrants arrived in Virginia. The Powhatan Confederacy, a Native American group, lived in the area during the time. The English built Fort Henry on the Appomattox River’s south bank in 1646. During the Revolutionary War, the British attempted to seize Virginia at the Battle of Petersburg in 1781. Petersburg was designated as an All-American city in 1958.
Fort Henry was established in 1645 at the Appomattox Falls, which is now the location of the city. Major Peter Jones, who became commander of the fort in 1675, is said to be the inspiration for the name (which was previously known as Peter’s Point and Peter’s Town).
Colonel William Byrd II explored the land in 1733, but the town was not created until 1748 by an act of the colonial government. It was taken by British forces led by General William Phillips and Benedict Arnold during the American Revolution (April 25, 1781). Lord Cornwallis landed with his troops on May 20, preparing for the war that would culminate in his surrendering at Yorktown.
Petersburg was formed in 1784 when the settlements of Petersburg, Blandford, Pocahontas, and Ravenscroft were merged and incorporated. During American Civil War, it was the site of the Petersburg Campaign, a ten-month battle in which both Union and Confederate armies lost over 70,000 men.

Petersburg, a major rail hub 23 miles (37 kilometers) south of Richmond, served as a key position for the Confederate capital’s defense. The Union army commenced a siege of the two cities in June 1864, with both sides quickly erecting 35-mile-long fortifications.
