History  

European settlement in Quincy, MA, dates back to 1625, four years after English colonists of the Plymouth Colony had surveyed the area. The settlers found the land fit for farming as a local Indigenous tribe had cleared it. Captain Wollaston led the colonist party, and Quincy, MA, still has a neighborhood named after him. It was initially incorporated as a part of Dorchester in 1630 and became a part of Braintree in 1640. At the beginning of 1708, Quincy’s modern border had begun to form and Braintree’s Northern Precinct. In 1792, it was gazetted as a town and as a city in 1888. It was named after John Quincy, an American politician. 

Area

Quincy is a city in the Great Boston Metropolitan Area and is a part of the immediate southern suburbs in Boston. It borders Boston to the north, Braintree to the south, Milton to the west, and Weymouth to the east. It has an elevation of 9.14 meters. According to the United States Census Bureau, Quincy, MA, has a total area of 26.9 square miles, of which 16.8 square miles is land, and 10.1 square miles is water. 23% of its area is uninhabited as part of the Blue Hills Reservation.
