Comcast Business Internet Springfield, IL
Springfield is the capital of Illinois and the seat of Sangamon County (1821). Springfield is located in the middle section of the state, along the Sangamon River, approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, and about 185 miles (300 kilometers) southwest of Chicago. The lifestyle here is quite updated with the effective connections from Comcast Business Internet Springfield, IL.
History
The region was first settled in 1820 when John Kelly erected a hut on what is now second and Jefferson streets. It was originally named Calhoun after U.S. Senator and Vice President John C. Calhoun, but in 1832 it was renamed Spring Creek after adjacent Spring Creek. On April 15, 1837, Abraham Lincoln relocated from New Salem to Springfield, where he remained until his election as president in 1861.
When Springfield was chosen as the state capital in 1837 (government offices moved to Springfield from Vandalia in 1839), it had a population of fewer than 3,000 people, thanks largely to the efforts of Lincoln and eight other members of the Illinois legislature (known as the “Long Nine” because they were all over 6 feet [1.8 meters] tall).
Lincoln served his final term in the legislature (1840–41), practiced before the state Supreme Court, made his famous “House Divided” address, and held an office as president-elect at the Old State Capitol (1837–53; reconstructed in the 1960s as a state historical monument). There is a collection of Lincoln at the historical library, and his body was laid in state there (May 3 and 4, 1865). State Historic Site of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices is also there.
The simple home of Abraham Lincoln, located at Eighth and Jackson streets, has been renovated. In 1972, the mansion and the four-block area surrounding it were listed as a national historic site. The Lincoln Tomb (another state historic site) is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery, in the city’s northwest corner, and houses the corpses of Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary, and their sons Edward, William, and Tad. The memorial is 117 feet (36 meters) tall, with a granite shaft atop it.
The Lincoln family pew may be seen at the First Presbyterian Church. The Great Western (now Lincoln) Depot, which has been renovated, was where Lincoln boarded his train to Washington, D.C. in 1861. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (opened in 2004–05) is also located in the city.
With the coming of the railroad in the mid-nineteenth century, Springfield’s economy boomed. Springfield began as an agricultural center, but by the turn of the century, it had become recognized for coal mining. The city serves as a wholesale and retail hub for a thriving agricultural region that produces corn (maize), soybeans, and animals. The Illinois State Fair has been hosted there every year since 1853.
Agricultural equipment, electric meters, and electrical equipment, chemicals, and construction materials are among the most common products made. Tourism is a valuable economic resource. Several insurance firms have their national headquarters in Springfield.
Tourism
Because of the tale of Abraham Lincoln’s life and the location of his house and the Abraham Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Springfield has become a global attraction.
