History 

Westfield, MA, was originally inhabited by Pocomtuc, a native American Tribe. It was earlier called Woronoco, which means “the winding land.” Later, around 1639 to 1640, European settlers built trading houses near Westfield. In 1647, it was made a part of Springfield by the government. However, Springfield forcefully sold the land to European settlers in 1658. Later in 1669, Westfield was incorporated as a town. Being situated between two streams, the Westfield River and the Little River, the original given name to it was “Streamfields.”

From its foundation to 1725, the town was the westernmost settlement in the Massachusetts. The town meetings were held in a church till 1839, after which a new town hall was set up. During the early 19th century, the manufacture of bricks, whips, and cigars was on a big scale. Westfield is also a prominent center of the buggy whip industry; that’s why it was also called “Whip City.” During this century, industrial growth was good in Westfield, and many new small-scale businesses like textile, bicycle radiators, abrasives, etc., were set up. 

It flourished well in the 19th century, but in the 2nd half of the 20th century, its industrial base suffered a lot due to wage competition in the U.S. Southeast. In 1939, Westfield, MA, became the first city in Massachusetts. 

Area

Westfield is divided into two parts by the Westfield River, namely the “North Side’ and the ”South Side.” The north side is also called Wyben. It has an elevation of 45 meters. The total area covered by it is 47.4 square miles, out of which 46.3 miles are land, and the rest is water.
