History

The land award to the initial inhabitants, John Crow, Thomas Howes, and Anthony Thacher, was described in court records as “the lands of Mattacheeset, now called Yarmouth,” on January 7, 1639. This is the first time the name has been used.

The new township to the east of Barnstable was named “Yarmouth.” This name is derived from an English township on the country’s eastern coast, around 100 miles north of London. But how did the name Yarmouth come to be chosen? None of the three original settlers came from that English town, after all. The initial immigrants that accompanied Crow, Howes, and Thacher came from all around England, though none of them are thought to have come from Yarmouth.

To determine the origin of the name, one must follow the Pilgrims’ footsteps.

Yarmouth, England, was an important seaport on the Yare River during the Pilgrims’ time. To the east of Yarmouth, across the North Sea, in the Netherlands, the former home country of many of the Mayflower passengers.

Because these Dutch passengers came to England via the port of Yarmouth, the new Cape township’s name appears to be a nod to the English harbor. Perhaps the Pilgrims were reminded of the Yare River in their former England by the Bass River. It’s possible that the exact reason for Yarmouth’s naming will never be known. Yarmouth, England, was known for its fishing and shipyards, by the way.

During World War II, the Germans bombed it over 50 times, killing over 1,000 people, wounding 8,000 more, and destroying approximately 4,000 dwellings. Yarmouth was a railway crossroads as well as a large seaport. Brewing and tourism have played a big part in the economy in recent years. The population has risen to a quarter-million people.

According to legend, Leif Eriksson fell in love with the area and established a permanent camp along the Bass River in the year 1000. Except for the perplexing “Bournedale stone” with its faintly runic writing, which is now displayed at the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne, no trace has been uncovered.

Why Eriksson left — and whether he traveled to Cape Cod at all, rather than some other location — are still questions. We do know that Yarmouth, which was most likely named after an English port, was the second Cape town to organize after Sandwich. Yarmouth Port had a “Captain’s Row” of 50 beautiful mansions at the height of the trade boom, most of which are still showpieces today.
