Cable vs. Fiber Optic internet connection

Since the innovation of the internet back in the early 21st century, modes of connections have evolved dramatically. As technology changes, faster, reliable and efficient internet connections are needed to handle the modifications. This has led to the creation of new connection techniques and upgrading of the already existing internet connection methods. Among the most common modes of internet connection are the cable and fiber-optic connections.

Cable internet connection

Cable connection is an internet service that uses a similar network as cable television. Data in a cable internet travels through coaxial. Delivering of internet access through the coaxial cables utilizes the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). The method is unique from that used by DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) as it uses high frequency for data and a much lower frequency for voice. Cable connection speed array from 512K to 20Mbps. The beauty of this internet connection is that many homes already have these cables. The majoradvantage of this method is that it does not require a phone service for it to operate since the data is always turned on as long as the cable is connected to the modem. However, this connection experiences speed limitations from the providers due to the high competition from neighbors. As a result, a lower bandwidth occurs thus offering a slower speed.

Fibre-Optic connection

The fiber-optic connection is among the world’s fastest-growing communication technology. Today, lots of communication organizations are changing their copper link cables into fiber optic cables. These cables transmit information between two places through the use of an entirely light based, optical technology. A fiber optic cable has the ability to transmit laser light within a long distance while carrying many messages at the same time more than the copper wire cables of the same diameter. Fiber optic technology is therefore the backbone of superhighway data and voice information that is digitally transmitted at a higher speed of up to 10Gps both symmetrical as well as download bandwidth. It has the ability to connect multiple devices without necessarily slowing the internet speed or its adeptness. It is not only fast but also reliable. This connection is built to last as it is resilient to damage unless physically damaged. Unfortunately, bending the fiber optic cables may cause some signal leakage and this can be a security risk as hackers may find a leeway to hack information.

It is important to acknowledge that both modes of internet connection are available at speeds fast enough to do what they are commanded. It is therefore essential to understand how these internet connections work so as to make the right choice of connection as per the requirements available.
