Located in central Nebraska, Grand Island is the fourth largest city in the state, with a population of 48,520 according to the census of 2010. It is the seat of Hall County, Nebraska and is also the principal city of the Grand Island Metropolitan Area which has an estimated population of 83,472 residents.
The history of Grand Island goes back to 1857 when a group of 35 German immigrants, with financial backing from a German banking house, set out for this island which in those days was called by French fur traders who frequented the area, ‘La Grand Island.’ Owing to its central location in the country, the initial settlers and their employers who provided financial support for the expedition had hopes that Grand Island would one day replace Washington D.C. as the nation’s capital. That dream, of course, never materialized.
All the same, once the first settlers had weathered the initial hardships, the town began to flourish soon enough and in less than ten years’ time, the railroad came to town. At about the same time, a couple of fortune hunters found some gold dust at Pike’s Peak, Colorado and this, much to the delight of the existing merchant community of Grand Island, attracted droves of fortune seekers to the area. Everything was being sold at high prices and the local economy of the town soared.
Grand Island Nebraska of today has of course come a long way from there. Often dubbed as the ‘Platte River Oasis’, the town today has an active trade community and a large service sector; offers good employment opportunities and a host of tourist attractions; and regularly arranges a number of human service programs aimed at improving the quality of life in and around the town which includes a large agriculture based area population that surrounds the town of Grand Island. In recognition of its various community initiatives, the town has thrice received the All-American City Award.
Places of attractions in and around the city of Grand Island include the Nebraska Nature Center, the Stuhr Museum of Prairie Pioneer, the Grand Island Little Theatre, the Fonner Park, the Heartland Events Center and more. The city also arranges a number of festivals all year round. The most popular among these events are the Nebraska State Fair, Community Arts & Concert Association, Central Nebraska Ethnic Festival, Harvest of Harmony Parade, Art in the Park and Hoops Mania.
