The city of Athens Texas with a population of 12,710 according to 2010 census is the county seat of Henderson County, Texas. Located close to the southern edge of the Cedar Creek Reservoir, the place is famous for its scenic splendor, its colorful musical heritage as well as home to some of the finest wineries in the state of Texas.
Although only a short drive away from the big, bustling city of Dallas, the beautiful environs and the sylvan setting of Athens, when you do come here, could very well give you the impression that you have travelled continents to get here! And we are not exaggerating! Not one bit! And especially if you visit Athens during autumn when the leaves of the deciduous trees (indigenous to this part of East Texas woodlands) begin to turn and explode in a breathtaking array of vibrant colors, that is an experience you will take away for life!
As is the case with any small town at these parts of the state, Athens offers a host of opportunities for many outdoor fun activities, be it fishing, hiking, nature walks, wildlife viewing, canoeing, kayaking and the like. But there is also so much more to do. For instance, try the ziplines at New York Zipline Adventure; get aboard a restored vintage steam train for a historic ride on the Texas State Railroad (which will also give you the opportunity to get a panoramic view of the picturesque landscape from high up the hills); get a firsthand experience of a barrel race at the Henderson Fair Park Complex; as they say, the possibilities are endless!
But for all its small-town charm, Athens does offer many quality characteristic of larger cities. There is public art and art galleries; the Henderson County Performing Arts Center; a multi-facility sports complex; the 22-lanes Athens Bowling Center; skating at Good Times Skate; great shopping, dining and fine dining destinations; and a flurry of different festivals and events that occur all year round.
So, no matter whether you are planning to relocate or just want to enjoy a weekend away from ‘city life’, give a thought to Athens and you won’t regret it!
