Located on the northern slopes of the Black Hills National Forest in Western South Dakota, the city of Belle Fourche is the county seat of Butte County, South Dakota. Belle Fourche (57717-2127) is a community of about 5,000 citizens and owing to its close proximity to the state borders of Wyoming and Montana, the town also acts as a major regional trade center for people from the states of Wyoming and Montana as well as for those from North Dakota.
The town is characterized by its exceptional quality of life. There are many family vacation and recreational points such as the Badlands National Park, Center of the Nation Monument, The Black Hills Roundup, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore and others.
Initially, the area was a popular and lucrative hunting ground for beaver trappers and fur traders. The place was home to a number of beautiful rivers, creeks, streams and forks and played the habitat for a variety of wildlife species. It was also located at the intersection of three rivers—Belle Fourche, Hay Creek and Redwater River (hence the name Belle Fourche which in French reads “Beautiful Fork”).
However, after the onset of the gold rush, many ranchers settled in the area arranging food and animals for the miners. Later even, after the construction of the railroad in the area, Belle Fourche, around the turn of the century, became the largest livestock shipping point in the world.
Agriculture and ranching communities still play an important role in the town’s economy today. In the historic downtown district, you will find a number of buildings from the turn of the century era still standing today. Apart from them, there are old coffee shops, a horde of antique stores as well as an old fabric store (a reminder of the old cotton trade that flourished in the area in its earliest days) that together lend a quaint charm to this historic area.
Other places of interest at Belle Fourche include the Tri-state Museum, the numerous parks of the city, the Rocky Point Recreation Area (located at the Belle Fourche Reservoir built in 1911), and the Center of the Nation Monument.
