The beautiful and picturesque town of Winthrop is located in the Okanogan County within the state of Washington, United States. It is situated to the east of Mazama and to the north of Twisp. Initially a town famous for fishing and hunting, Winthrop got popular after placer gold was discovered in the Slate Creek District in the spring of 1868. The town derives its name from Theodore Winthrop, a graduate from Yale who was also a gifted author of the 19th century and a traveler/adventurer. The town was devastated in a fire and was rebuilt thereafter. Winthrop is known for several places of interest and has buildings with American Old West design making it a popular tourist destination thronged by a large number of people all around the year.
Winthrop is also a popular cross-country skiing site that has over 200 miles of groomed trails.
