Onowa is a city in Monona County, Iowa, United States, where it is considered the county seat. At the 2010 Census, the population was 2,998. It’s the largest town on the Missouri River’s Iowa side between the Sioux City and Council Bluffs.
HISTORY
The city got its name for from a character in the poem The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1857, Onawa was platted, with the railway coming to the city in 1867. Besides that, the city is renowned for having the widest main street in the continental United States.
Between 1944 and 1946, Onawa was a prisoner-of-war (POW) campsite for German soldiers. According to historical documents, there were mostly 50 POWs in camp during the war. In the central Iowa town of Algona, there was a larger camp that was said to have housed about 5,400 German POWs.

The city is situated in the Loess Hills region of western Iowa, which is a unique environmental and geological area. The city consists of natural areas as Preparation Canyon State Park, Lewis & Clark State Park, and the Loess Hills State Forest.
