Ames is a city located in the central part of Story County, Iowa, United States. It is located approximately 30 miles north of Des Moines, and had a 2010 population of 58,965.

Named after Oakes Ames of Massachusetts, an influential transcontinental railroad promoter, a congressman, and a friend of Cynthia Olive Duff, the founder of the city of Ames. Established in 1864 to serve as a station stop on Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad.
