Located at the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 550, Bloomfield is a city in San Juan County in the northern part of New Mexico. The city is part of a tri-city area, the other two being Farmington, the largest of the three, and Aztec which is the county seat of San Juan. Together, the three cities form the Farmington Metropolitan area.

As of the 2010 census, Bloomfield New Mexico had a population of 8,112 and there were 1,708 families residing within the city limits. About 63% of the city’s population was White while the Native Americans made up 16.71% of the population. The median family income for the city was $34,760 and the per capita income $14,424.

Traditionally, the oil and gas industries have been the mainstay of the city’s economy while the service sector in the form of retail and restaurants have played an important part too, especially since the city is surrounded by a number of unincorporated rural communities the members of whom need to come to town to shop for various basic provisions. While these sectors still play a significant role in Bloomfield’s economy, the tourism industry in the city has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few decades.

This is little surprise since the city is surrounded by a host of highly attractive tourist destinations some of which include the Salmon Ruins (remains of a 11th century Ansazi Village) or Aztec Ruins, part of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, come with wider cultural and historical appeal and therefore attract visitors from a more diverse spectrum. Additionally, the recognition of these places as Heritage Sites by international bodies such as UNESCO and others have sparked greater interest in them in recent times. The Chaco Culture Park, for example, was announced as the world’s newest international Dark Sky Park in 2013 and it is only one of four places in the world which has hitherto received this distinction.
