Brussels Wisconsin is a small Belgian-American settlement town in Door County, Wisconsin. According to 2010 census, the population of the city was 1,112 and there were 303 families residing in the town. Brussels is also the third-largest Belgian-American settlement in terms of proportion of residents (36.4%), just behind the town of Union (49%) and Red River, Wisconsin (47%).
The first settlers in the town were four families from Brabant, Belgium. Soon, there were as many as forty-four families, all part of the large group of Belgian immigrants who came to America in the 1850s, who made Brussels their home. Many elements that are still found in today’s Brussels attest to its Belgian heritage; surnames, food dishes (such as trippe, jutt, booyah, etc.) place names (Brussels, Luxemburg, Rosiere, Namur) and not least the Walloon language that can still be frequently heard during conversations between Brussels natives. Sadly however, much of the architecture of the first decades of the settlement is gone. The historic firestorm that swept across Door County in 1871 wreaked havoc to Brussels, just as it caused severe damage to many other adjoining settlements in the county.
However, anybody interested in the Belgian heritage of the town may pay a visit to The Belgian Heritage Center located at 1255 County Road, Brussels. Many elements and artefacts carefully preserved at the center will give the visitor a fair idea of the history of the Belgian settlement not only in Brussels, but at other parts of Wisconsin as well.
As for the nature of the town, the thing that strikes first any visitor to Brussels (54204) is the serene, almost bucolic setting of the town and the charming and friendly behavior of its residents. If you are at Brussels for a few days, it may be a good idea to stay at the Quietwoods South Camping Resort. You will find this family owned country resort the first thing as you enter the beautiful countryside of Door County. Located over a sprawling 51-acre land of shady woodland, this is the perfect place for the visitor to relax and savor the rustic charm of the Brussels countryside.
