Carthage 28327-6089 is a small town in eastern North Carolina with a population of over 2,000. It is the county seat of Moore County, North Carolina and is surrounded by a number of unincorporated communities including Jackson Springs, High Falls, Eagle Springs and Lakeview. The town is also a short distance away from Pinehurst, the place golf enthusiasts flock in droves to during the U.S. Open.
Today a quiet and scenic neighborhood with an unmistakable small town charm, the history of Carthage goes back a rather long way. The city was incorporated way back in 1776. Later, however, the name of the town got changed to Fagansville. This was in honor of Richardson Fagin, a prominent resident of the town, who donated a tract of his own land to build a house for the county seat. In 1818, the old name of Carthage was restored, although the reason for it is unknown.
Carthage was also the town where the Tyson Buggy Company was founded and used to operate from. In the 1800s, the company was a major cart and buggy manufacturer and the town still celebrates this heritage during its annual Buggy Festival that takes place every spring. The festival is celebrated in the old town square around the historic building of the Old Court House.
Those who have a taste for old architectural styles may also go for a tour of the Carthage Historic District where one will find a host of old style buildings (most of them still in good shape) that encompass a variety of architectural styles including Colonial Revival, Greek Revival and Queen Anne style.
Also, and many may not know this, there is a hidden airstrip in Carthage where you can land your private planes with prior permission. The airstrip also features an eating joint—Pik-N-Pig—which serves great lunchtime food.
