Castle Rock WA 98611 is located between the Willapa Hills and the western base of Mount St. Helens and is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. It is a part of the Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city gets its name from “The Rock”, a 190 ft high volcanic rock that outcrops over the Cowlitz River and resembles a castle. It became a geographical landmark for Cowlitz Indians and the Hudson Bay Company traders since 1852. Today, Castle Rock is a small thriving community, a small population and The Rock Community Park, complete with picnic tables, hiking and adventure trails and a historical marker.
The history of Castle Rock goes back to more than a century and a half when Eliza and William Huntington settled here in 1852. Castle Rock slowly grew in population and was incorporated on June 20, 1890. It flourished as a steamboat port and trading center for valley farms on the Cowlitz River.
By 1940, Castle Rock had become a hub that supported dairy farming and lumber manufacturing from the famous Western red cedar which grows in abundance here.
According to the 2010 census, Castle Rock had 1,982 people distributed among 784 households and 519 families. The population of the city is predominantly White at 91.4% followed by African American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other races.
The bulk of the Industries in Castle Rock are in the manufacturing sector at 25% followed by Construction at 15%, Educational Services 12%, Retail Trade 8%. The rest is almost evenly distributed among transportation and warehousing, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting.
