Layton is easily accessible from Salt Lake City, Ogden, Salt Lake City International Airport, Antelope Island, and the Frontrunner commuter rail. With immediate proximity to Hill Air Force Base, a large hospitality district (1,000+ hotel beds) and conference center, the Layton Hills Mall, multiple nationally recognized retail and food chains, the East Gate Business Park, and the Weber State University-Davis campus, Layton City is a regional economic development leader.
Layton produced $1.34 billion in retail sales activity in 2014, making it the second biggest market north of Salt Lake City and the seventh-largest in Utah.
Layton was founded as an offshoot of Kaysville in the 1850s and is named after Christopher Layton, a Latter-day Saint pioneer, and leader. When Kaysville was founded as a city in 1868, it was included in the borders. Still, by the 1880s, many Layton citizens sought to secede from the city. They contested Kaysville’s right to tax their land, saying they did not get municipal services. Linford v. Ellison, which ruled in favor of the Layton property owners, reached the United States Supreme Court in 1894. When Layton became an autonomous unincorporated territory in 1902, the separatist campaign had finally triumphed. After continued development, it was established as a town in 1920.

Layton is part of the Davis School District and features a branch of Weber State University. Three high schools, five junior high schools, and thirteen primary schools serve the city.
