North Ogden was founded in the winter of 1850 by two groups of cattle ranchers from Ogden. Brigham Young had warned the Campbells and Riddles not to leave the fort in Ogden due to problems with the local Shoshone. Fearing Shoshone retaliation, they were compelled to return to Ogden after a few months of wintering their cattle. After the conflict with the Shoshone was largely resolved the following year, Jonathan Campbell returned with several other families to permanently occupy the site.

In the mid to late nineteenth century, the sugar beet industry was a significant early enterprise, and a processing and canning plant was constructed in the town for this reason. David Ephraim Randall was the proprietor of the canning plant throughout its existence. North Ogden also built the “Dummy Line,” a spur from Ogden’s Union Pacific Station. Large fruit orchards were established with the North Ogden Fruit Exchange in 1924, and their yield became an economic staple for the region. This was the region’s first fruit cooperative, selling fruit on the interstate market via train.

The increasing need for water in the 1930s prompted the city to formally incorporate on February 1, 1934. The first mayor was David Gilbert Randall. He held the job for eleven years. On July 4, the same decade witnessed the birth of the Cherry Days festival. After World War II, North Ogden expanded to become thecentral suburb for Ogden and other bigger cities. Its industry began to dwindle, and most agricultural lands began to be subdivided for housing.
