Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon. The city has an estimated population of 632,309 and the population of the metropolitan area reaches up to 2.3 million. Yet, Portland, in many ways, is far from the impression the epithet big city normally conjures up in our mind. What with its laid-back atmosphere and a largely friendly attitude of its residents, coupled with the natural beauty of Portland and its surroundings, the city appears to be a seamless blend of the so-called ‘small town charm’ and qualities of life characteristic of big cities.

The city has an awesome mass transit system which justifiably ranks among the best in the country. Streets are bike and pedestrian-friendly. In fact, most downtown hotels will offer bikes free for their guests or you can rent one from one of many good bike rental stores you will find around town.

Many Portland residents have already joined in the bike revolution and have gotten rid of their cars for good, or at least they rarely use them for everyday commute. So, touring around in a bike will also make you look like a Portland native. Why should that matter, are you asking? Well, that is because Portlanders have a reputation of being the most self-satisfied city tribe in the whole country. And this also brings us to the question of rain.

There are far too many cities in the country which annually receive more rain than Portland. Summers are sunny and clear enough. The rain only starts pouring in earnest during the winter months (2-3 months most). Other times, if it rains, it is mostly a drizzle and a morning drizzle often gives way to a dazzling noon. Anyhow, the point is, don’t carry an umbrella. A hoodie or a hat is enough to weather the drizzle and you just don’t want to look like a knucklehead toting around an umbrella on a perfectly clear afternoon.

As to the famous bosky setting of the city, all you need is head to Forest Park which with its 70 miles of hiking and walking trails, and is the largest wooded urban park in the country, barely a 10-minute drive away from downtown Portland. And if you are willing to go further, possibilities seem to be endless! There is Mount Hood an hour’s drive away to east of the city; to the west, an hour and half drive will take you right to Pacific Ocean; then there is the high desert of central Oregon, a three hour drive from Portland; 45 miles up the gorgeous Columbia River gorge, there is Hood River; and the city is itself located at the confluence of Columbia and Willamette Rivers—the intersection point a treat for nature lovers.
