Smithfield is a town in Cache County, Utah, in the United States. The population was 9,495 at the time of the census, with a 2019 population projection of 12,025 people. It is part of the Logan, Utah-Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is its second-largest city after Logan, the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total land area of 5.0 square miles.

Smithfield was built on Summit Creek in 1857 by brothers Robert and John Thornley and their relative Seth Langton, who was ordered north from Salt Lake City by LDS Church President Brigham Young to establish a community. Robert returned with his new wife, Annie Brighton, after a preliminary reconnaissance trip. The first winter was spent in the back of a wagon box. With other settlers coming the following summer, a small fort was erected on the creek’s side, which still stands today.

As the community flourished, a bishop was appointed to oversee the church congregation, and the town was named after him. By 1917, the community had established a Carnegie library and a Rotary club and planted trees on both sides of Main Street. For many years, the town was reliant on dairying, a Del Monte canning facility, and the sugar beet industry; however, it is now predominantly a bedroom neighborhood for Logan and Utah State University. Smithfield has one public high school as well as three public primary schools.

The typical family income is $49,828, and the median household income is $47,745. Males have a median income of $35,708, while females have a median income of $21,076. The city’s per capita income is $14,933. Approximately 4.5 % and 6.2 % are poor, with 6.6 % of the population falling into this category.
