The county seat and largest city in Uintah County, Vernal, is in northeastern Utah, approximately 175 miles east of Salt Lake City and 20 miles west of the Colorado border. During the terrible “Hard Winter” of 1879, many people came perilously near to death.

Vernal’s economy depends on extracting natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, phosphate, and uintaite (more commonly known as Gilsonite). Tourism also contributes to Vernal’s economy, owing to the town’s Old West history and location as a significant source of old dinosaur fossils. Vernal and the surrounding region are popular with outdoor enthusiasts because they are close to several sites for fishing, fly fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

In Vernal, there are elementary and high schools for kids.  Ashley Valley Education Center, Uintah High, Uintah Middle School, Vernal Middle, Ashley Elementary, Discovery Elementary, and a branch of Utah State University are among Vernal’s public schools.
