History of Washington, UT

The first missionaries of the Cotton Mission settled in Washington in 1857. Cotton cultivation and processing were the primary reasons for its colonization and survival till the turn of the century. In May 1857, ten families headed by Samuel Adair and twenty-eight families led by Robert Covington arrived. Isaac C. Haight, who ruled over the Parowan LDS Stake, created the community in this rough, arid valley in Utah Territory as a branch of the Harmony Ward. During this period, the name Washington was chosen to commemorate the nation’s first president, and civic and religious leaders were upheld.

Whether living in tents, wagons, or dugouts, the pioneers prepped the ground for maize and built dams and ditches. Most of the settlers were Mormon converts who had previously resided in the South, where cotton was the dominant crop. Their call was to cultivate cotton to secure Zion’s independence and self-reliance.

Washington’s tale matches the Cotton Mission’s history. Washington had more cotton acreage planted than the other communities. Floods swept down their dams constructed on quicksand bottoms year after year, and they suffered from chills and fever (malaria carried by mosquitoes bred in the springs and along creek borders), thirst, grasshoppers, and animals at night. They also quickly discovered that man does not exist just on cotton.

They discovered that to live, and they would have to cultivate their food and supply their wares. Many left the mission; by June 1861, just twenty families were left in Washington. Church officials in Salt Lake City issued more calls to serve in the mission, and by 1964, there were 85 families totaling 413 persons.

Poverty plagued the colonists from the start. They successfully cultivated cotton, but since they were so distant from the market, they could not dispose of their lint. They attempted to ship freight to California and Omaha, Nebraska, and several were sold to Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City. However, these solutions were only temporary, and Brigham Young felt that a facility closer to the produce was required.

He had a plant dismantled in Salt Lake City and moved to Washington, where the water supply was consistent all year. The colonists supplied the labor and materials; the one-story factory was finished in 1866. They opened in January 1867 and built two additional stories in 1868. Work was two dollars per day at the time. Most employees were paid for manufacturing items, produce, and factory scrip. In connection with the plant, a shop was run, which functioned as a clearing house for most of the area’s products.
