Named after Benjamin Pierce Cheney- a Boston railroad industrialist, Cheney Washington is the home of all races; Whites, African Americans, Native Americans and many others all together totaling to 10,590 as per the 2010 census. It sits on a land 4.30 square miles in the County of Spokane, State of Washington and runs under the administration of Mayor Tom Trulove. The growth of the city is attributed to its strong links to trail riding, agriculture and education. The construction of the railroad also accelerated the growth of the town.
At an elevation of 2,352 feet above sea level, hot dry summers and cold, wet and windy winters due to its semi-arid condition, the town does well to support its population. The numerous businesses that take place date back to the construction of the rail road. Healthcare dominates the employment base but other businesses; agriculture, restaurants and supermarkets also do well. The city has hopes of expanding this with the installation of fiber optic cables which will attract industries. Cheney Washington is proud of its culture hosting events such as the Cheney Rodeo Days, Happy Fun Run among others. Additionally, it is the home of the Eastern Regional Branch of the Washington State Archives.

The city boasts of having the Columbia Plateau Trail State Park and the Turnbull National Wildlife which both attract tourists earning it some income. Infrastructure is well developed with good hospital and surgical services, good transport network with major highways, airports and the railway. Like many other cities, education is a priority and the City hosts many schools in different levels such as the Eastern Washington University and two major libraries; the Cheney Library and the John F Kennedy Library.
