Coolidge is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. As per the 2010 Census, the population of Coolidge was 11,825.
The modern history of the city is based mainly on agriculture and specifically cotton. Coolidge was founded in 1925 when R.J. Jones laid out an 80 acres of site during the construction of the Coolidge Dam on the nearby Gila River. The building of the dam was completed in 1930 and both the dam and the townsite were named after Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States.
The main attraction of Coolidge, Arizona is the Casa Grande Ruins estimated by archaeologists to be around 700 years old. When approaching the ruins, visitors can see the Case Grande, or “Great House” in Spanish, rising across the rugged desert landscape. You’ll be able to view the “Great House” up close, though visitors are not permitted inside the four-story structure. Housed undera protective metal canopy, this impressive structure has withstood the test of time and is well worth a visit.
Another must-visit site is the McFarland State Historic Park which offers a variety of historic buildings just fifteen minutes outside Coolidge. The park was opened in 1979 and is an effort to preserve the history of the area. The main attraction of the park is a museum housed in a building. Originally, it served as the county’s courthouse in 1878 and was later converted into a hospital, a public health and welfare center, and the Pinal County Historical Society Museum.
