Located right next to the Olympic National Park in northwest Washington, Forks is a small town in Clallam County with a population of 3,532. Traditionally, the local timber industry has been the backbone of the economy of the town. The verdant town surrounded on all sides by beautiful hills, rainforests, and a great number of rivers and streams (the forks that gave the town its name) offer plenty opportunities for fishing, rafting, kayaking, hiking and cycling to active individuals and families.
Yet, for all that, tourism used to play a relatively minor role in the town’s economy and not many people outside the neighboring regions knew much about the town. However, all of that changed about a decade ago with the publication of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling Twilight series novels, and especially the film adaptations which became a rage with the teenagers.
Consequently, the town of Forks (98331-9067) has almost become synonymous with the Twilight saga. In a quaint way that is fitting too, since much of the action in this supernatural/fairytale story takes place in the rainforests that lie around the town and incidentally, Forks is known to be the rainiest town in Washington State. The town now arranges a full day Twilight Tour that takes twilight-fans to all the locations where Meyer had set the actions in the book (the film, however, wasn’t filmed in Forks).
But there is also so much more to do when you are at Forks.
Trout, salmon and steelhead are abundant in the many rivers of Forks Washington (Sol Duc, Calawah, Hoh, Bogachiel, Quillayute). You can float on one of these rivers on a drift boat. You can also fly fish on one of the many beautiful lakes in the area. Or, if you are interested in sea-fishing, take an ocean charter from La Push and fish for lingcod, salmon or halibut.
For beachcombers, there is the gorgeous ruby Beach south of Forks and to the west of Forks, you will find wilderness beaches of First and Second Beach and Rialto Beach all of which fall inside the Olympic National Park area.
